When a child is diagnosed with Autism
parents feel it is the end of the road, however, it is not so. There is a lot of
potential in the child which needs to be nurtured so that the child can lead a
healthy fulfilled life. However, this can happen only with acceptance. Acceptance is NOT trying to change autistics to become
like non-autistics. It means to modify our environments and give necessary
support so that the world becomes less confusing for them. Not to judge them
by what they are doing but by believing that they are capable of learning.
Early Intervention is a must
Early intervention happens in pre-school
age as early as 2 to 3 years. In this period, a young child's
brain is still forming, meaning it is more changeable than at older ages,
because of this early intervention has a better chance of being effective in
the longer term. Early interventions not only give children the best start
possible but also the best chance of developing to their full potential. The
sooner a child gets help, the greater the chance for learning and progress.
Early intervention programs should
include:
- Parent training
- Communication using AAC
- Play Therapy
- Physical therapy
Parental involvement
is key to success
Accept the child as the way she/ he is. Respect, love, and learn from
your child. Try to learn more about autism. Find out your child’s interests and
work on them. Select therapies that work for your child. Have a prescribed
home program and work on it. Involve all family members. Frequent visits to parks, malls, restaurants,
homes of relatives/ friends, and vacations will provide him an opportunity to learn
from the environment.
Structured Home Environment
A comprehensive home program is necessary, following the structured method
to develop appropriate attending skills and Activities of Daily Living (ADL)
skills of the child, which is necessary to make the child ready for school.
Some of the materials you may require for these are:
Cause & effect toys
Visual Schedules
Work Station
Equipment to cater to the sensory needs of the child – gym ball, swing,
trampoline, etc
Enjoy the journey with your child. Please have realistic goals, be patient, be
positive, and gear up for this long journey ahead. It’s a marathon race so do
not try to run too fast and do take regular intervals. Do not forget to
celebrate small achievements. Always remember your daughter/son, is a child full of life who needs your love & support.
