Attending Skills

Before we start to teach a child in the Autism Spectrum we work on the attending skills of the child. Attending skills are all those skills required by the student to do any activity in any particular place, be it a table, desk, carpet, bean bag, playground – wherever learning is going to occur. We need to make sure they are ready to learn.

The attending skills are some essential foundational skills that any student needs to know how to do, like they need to know how to:

Ø  attend to an adult

Ø  sustain focus on the given work

Ø  imitate in 1:1 or in a group

Ø  wait

Ø  respond to prompts, instructions, etc.

Ø  sit in one designated place for the required time, to complete a given task

Most of the kids in the autism spectrum have sensory processing disorder which affect their attending skills & sitting behaviour. We can improve the attending skills and sitting behaviour of the kids in the spectrum by use of different Teaching Learning Materials (TLM).

In the home program of Autispace we provide an online 1:1 session with a Special Educator to develop a variety of skills depending on the needs of the student. One of the skills targeted in the home program of Autispace is developing the attending skills of the student, using custom made Teaching Learning Materials, as per the requirement of the student. We focus on improving sitting tolerance & slowly developing work behaviour of the student.
